What is Data Science?ما هو علم البيانات؟

Data is everywhere. Every app you open, every video you watch, and every purchase you make creates information. Data Science is the field that makes sense of all this data and uses it to make better decisions.

A data scientist collects data, looks for patterns in it, and uses those patterns to answer questions or predict what might happen next. It combines a bit of programming, some math, and a lot of curiosity about how things work.

And you don't need to know it all to begin. If you enjoy solving problems and asking "why," you're already off to a good start.

البيانات موجودة في كل مكان. فكل تطبيق تستخدمه، وكل فيديو تشاهده، وكل عملية شراء تقوم بها تُنتج معلومات وبيانات جديدة. ويُعدّ علم البيانات المجال الذي يهدف إلى فهم هذه البيانات وتحليلها والاستفادة منها لاتخاذ قرارات أفضل.

يقوم عالم البيانات بجمع البيانات، والبحث عن الأنماط والعلاقات الموجودة فيها، ثم استخدام هذه الأنماط للإجابة عن الأسئلة أو التنبؤ بما قد يحدث مستقبلًا. ويجمع هذا التخصص بين البرمجة والرياضيات والتفكير التحليلي، إلى جانب الفضول والرغبة في فهم كيفية عمل الأشياء.

ولست بحاجة إلى معرفة كل شيء قبل البدء. فإذا كنت تستمتع بحل المشكلات وتحب طرح الأسئلة والبحث عن إجابات لها، فأنت تمتلك بالفعل أساسًا جيدًا للانطلاق في هذا المجال.

How to applyكيفية التقديم

Admission is through the Faculty of Information's entrance exam (مباراة الدخول). The exact dates, fees, and location change every year, but the process itself stays the same.

يكون القبول عبر مباراة الدخول إلى كلية الإعلام. تتغيّر المواعيد والرسوم ومكان الامتحان كل عام، لكن آلية القبول نفسها تبقى ثابتة.

Who can applyمن يحقّ له التقدّم

  • Holders of the Lebanese Baccalaureate (Part II) or its equivalent
  • International students with an official equivalence for their secondary certificate
  • Holders of the BT or the Technical Baccalaureate (or equivalent)
  • حاملو البكالوريا اللبنانية (القسم الثاني) أو ما يعادلها
  • الطلاب الأجانب الحائزون على معادلة رسمية للشهادة الثانوية الحاصلين عليها في بلادهم

Preparatory courseالدورة التحضيرية

Before the exam, the faculty usually organizes a 3-day preparatory course to help you get ready and boost your chances of passing. Its dates and locations are announced through the official channels.

قبل المباراة، تنظّم الكلية عادةً دورة تحضيرية مدّتها 3 أيام لمساعدتك على الاستعداد وزيادة فرص نجاحك. وتُعلَن مواعيدها وأماكنها عبر القنوات الرسمية.

  • Lebanese Baccalaureate Part II (or equivalent)
  • Individual Civil Status Record (إخراج قيد), a certified copy of it, or a copy of your ID card (the original must be presented upon registration)
  • 3 certified passport-sized photos
  • Registration fee: 500,000 LBP
  • Financial stamp (طابع مالي)
  • البكالوريا اللبنانية القسم الثاني (أو ما يعادلها)
  • إخراج قيد، أو صورة مصدّقة عنه، أو صورة عن بطاقة الهوية (مع إبراز الأصل عند التسجيل)

After results: administrative registrationبعد النتائج: التسجيل الإداري

  • A certified copy of the Individual Civil Status Record (إخراج قيد إفرادي) or your ID card

  • The online registration application
  • Insured students: a certificate proving you are registered in health insurance, or a copy of your health card (Army, Internal Security Forces, State Security, etc.)
  • Uninsured students: a certified copy of the Family Civil Status Record (إخراج قيد عائلي)
  • A financial stamp

Registration usually opens over the summer, with the exam held around September, but it shifts each year. What you'll studyماذا ستدرس

The major is spread across six semesters, moving from the basics toward more advanced, hands-on data science. Each linked course opens its own page on DataRoad, with summaries, past exams, and quizzes, all free.

يمتدّ الاختصاص على ستة فصول، تنتقل فيها من الأساسيات نحو مواضيع أكثر تقدّماً وتطبيقاً. كل مادة مرتبطة بصفحتها الخاصة على DataRoad، حيث تجد الملخّصات والامتحانات السابقة والاختبارات، وكلها مجانية.

Where it can take youإلى أين يأخذك

A data science degree opens doors across almost every industry, because nearly every field now runs on data. These skills also travel well, you can work locally, remotely for companies abroad, or freelance, and the Licence is a solid base for a Master's.

تفتح شهادة علم البيانات أبواباً في معظم المجالات تقريباً، لأن كل قطاع اليوم يعتمد على البيانات. وهذه المهارات مطلوبة عالمياً: يمكنك العمل محلياً، أو عن بُعد مع شركات في الخارج، أو بشكل حر، كما تشكّل الإجازة أساساً متيناً لإكمال الماجستير.

You don't need to be a genius at math or already know how to code. What matters most is curiosity, patience, and a willingness to keep learning. It might be a great fit if you:

لست بحاجة لأن تكون عبقرياً في الرياضيات أو أن تعرف البرمجة مسبقاً. ما يهمّ أكثر هو الفضول والصبر والاستعداد للتعلّم المستمر. وقد يكون مناسباً لك إذا كنت:

  • enjoy solving problems and figuring out how things work
  • are comfortable with logic and numbers
  • like the idea of working with computers and technology
  • are okay studying mostly in English

What does a data scientist actually do?ماذا يفعل عالِم البيانات فعلاً؟
They collect and clean data, explore it for patterns, build models to make predictions, and turn the results into insights that help people make decisions. Day to day, it's a mix of coding, statistics, and explaining findings.يجمع البيانات ويُنظّفها، ويستكشفها بحثاً عن الأنماط، ويبني نماذج للتنبّؤ، ثم يحوّل النتائج إلى رؤى تساعد على اتخاذ القرارات. وعملياً، هو مزيج من البرمجة والإحصاء وشرح النتائج.
What's the difference between Data Science, AI, and Machine Learning?ما الفرق بين علم البيانات والذكاء الاصطناعي وتعلّم الآلة؟
They overlap a lot. Data Science is the broad field of getting value from data; Machine Learning is a set of techniques that let computers learn patterns from data; and AI is the wider goal of making machines act intelligently. In practice, a data scientist uses machine learning as one of their main tools.تتداخل هذه المجالات كثيراً. فعلم البيانات هو المجال الواسع لاستخراج القيمة من البيانات؛ وتعلّم الآلة مجموعة تقنيات تتيح للحواسيب تعلّم الأنماط من البيانات؛ والذكاء الاصطناعي هو الهدف الأوسع لجعل الآلات تتصرّف بذكاء. وعملياً، يستخدم عالِم البيانات تعلّم الآلة كإحدى أدواته الأساسية.
What tools and languages will I use?ما الأدوات واللغات التي سأستخدمها؟
Most of the work happens in Python (with libraries like pandas, NumPy, and scikit-learn) and SQL for databases, plus tools for charts and, later, machine-learning frameworks. You learn them gradually, one at a time.يجري معظم العمل بلغة بايثون (مع مكتبات مثل pandas وNumPy وscikit-learn) ولغة SQL للتعامل مع قواعد البيانات، إضافةً إلى أدوات للرسوم البيانية، ولاحقاً أطر تعلّم الآلة. وتتعلّمها تدريجياً واحدةً تلو الأخرى.
Is data science a good career?هل علم البيانات مجال مهني جيّد؟
Yes. Data is now part of almost every industry, so the skills are in demand across tech, finance, healthcare, marketing, and more. They also travel well: you can work locally, remotely for companies abroad, or freelance.نعم. أصبحت البيانات جزءاً من معظم القطاعات تقريباً، لذا فهذه المهارات مطلوبة في التكنولوجيا والمال والصحة والتسويق وغيرها. وهي مهارات قابلة للتنقّل: يمكنك العمل محلياً، أو عن بُعد مع شركات في الخارج، أو بشكل حرّ.
Data Science or Computer Science, and why not just Computer Science?علم البيانات أم علوم الكمبيوتر، ولماذا لا أدرس علوم الكمبيوتر؟
They overlap a lot, but the focus is different. Computer Science is broader, going deeper into algorithms, software, and systems, and it keeps your options open across all of tech. Data Science is more focused: from the start you work with statistics, real data, and machine learning, the exact skills a data role needs, so you spend less time on things you won't use. You can reach data science from either path, but the Data Science track is the more direct route. Go with CS if you want the widest base, and Data Science if you already know it's data that excites you.يتداخل المجالان كثيراً، لكن التركيز مختلف. فعلوم الكمبيوتر أوسع، إذ تتعمّق أكثر في الخوارزميات والبرمجيات والأنظمة، وتُبقي خياراتك مفتوحة في مجالات التكنولوجيا كافة. أما علم البيانات فأكثر تركيزاً: تعمل منذ البداية على الإحصاء والبيانات الحقيقية وتعلّم الآلة، أي المهارات التي يحتاجها العمل في البيانات تحديداً، فتقضي وقتاً أقل على أمور لن تستخدمها. يمكنك الوصول إلى علم البيانات من أيّ من المسارين، لكن مسار علم البيانات هو الطريق الأكثر مباشرةً. اختر علوم الكمبيوتر إن أردت الأساس الأوسع، وعلم البيانات إن كنت تعرف مسبقاً أن البيانات هي ما يثير حماسك.
Do I need a degree to learn it, or is self-learning enough?هل أحتاج شهادة جامعية لتعلّمه، أم يكفي التعلّم الذاتي؟
Honestly, you can learn data science on your own. There are tons of free courses, books, and projects, and some people do break in self-taught with a strong portfolio. But a degree gives you structure, solid math and statistics foundations, internships, and a credential that makes a first interview easier to get (and some employers or scholarships abroad still ask for one). Neither path is wrong: a degree lowers the difficulty and opens more doors, while self-learning needs more discipline and real proof of your work.بصراحة، يمكنك تعلّم علم البيانات بنفسك. فهناك الكثير من الدورات والكتب والمشاريع المجانية، وبعض الناس يدخلون المجال بالتعلّم الذاتي مع معرض أعمال قوي. لكن الشهادة الجامعية تمنحك بنية منظّمة، وأساساً متيناً في الرياضيات والإحصاء، وفرص تدريب، وشهادة تجعل الحصول على أول مقابلة أسهل (وبعض الشركات أو المنح في الخارج لا تزال تطلبها). لا مسار منهما خاطئ: فالشهادة تخفّف الصعوبة وتفتح أبواباً أكثر، بينما يتطلّب التعلّم الذاتي انضباطاً أكبر وإثباتاً عملياً لمهاراتك.
Do I need to know how to code before I start?هل أحتاج لمعرفة البرمجة قبل البدء؟
No. The program starts from the basics. Curiosity and a willingness to learn matter more than prior experience.لا. يبدأ البرنامج من الأساسيات. الفضول والرغبة في التعلّم أهمّ من الخبرة المسبقة.
How long does it take?كم تستغرق مدة الدراسة؟

Which Baccalaureate background is best?أي خلفية بكالوريا هي الأفضل؟
A scientific track helps, especially for the math part of the exam, but holders of the Lebanese Bac (Part II) and its equivalents, the BT, or the Technical Bac can all apply.الفرع العلمي يساعد، خصوصاً في قسم الرياضيات من المباراة، لكن يمكن التقدّم لحاملي البكالوريا اللبنانية (القسم الثاني) وما يعادلها، والـ BT، والبكالوريا الفنية.
